Community Update

The Springfield School District is working with E3 to launch a new Literacy Partners program in the fall of 2007.  Working with the Springfield Chamber of Commerce and the business organization, Team Springfield, the new Springfield Leadership Team has formed and plans are well underway to launch the program with three middle schools.

The Leadership Team is co-chaired by Nancy Golden, superintendent of public instruction for the district, and Dan Egan, executive director of the Springfield Chamber of Commerce.  Employers participating on the leadership team include Springfield Utility Board, Oregon Community Credit Union, PacificSource Health Plans and Umpqua Bank.

The program will launch this fall in Briggs, Hamlin and Thurston middle schools.  After a brief orientation, employee volunteers will read for one hour per week with students and use simple reading tools to help students improve their reading comprehension and fluency.

Employers interested in getting involved in the program can contact the school district or the Springfield Chamber of Commerce.

Goal:
Improve the reading skills of middle school students in the Springfield School District.
