Literacy Partners, a middle school reading mentoring program, was created by E3, the Eugene School District and the Eugene Chamber of Commerce. The successful program, which focuses on helping struggling readers develop critical reading skills, was later replicated in several other communities. The middle grades are pivotal for readers, as they shift their focus from learning to read to using reading to learn. Through this partnership, employers provide volunteer mentors to work with middle school students on reading skills at least one hour per week during the school day. Mentors are trained to work with students to build reading confidence and literacy skills such as comprehension and fluency.
