Ninth graders are adolescents undergoing the difficult transition from middle school to high school. Studies show that students who have a successful 9th grade year almost always graduate, and are usually prepared to go on to some form of post-secondary education. Conversely, students who do not succeed in their freshman year are more likely to drop out of high school - limiting their future options.

Schools can ease the transition to high school and help more students stay in school by creating a freshman transition program. A strong transition program serves as a bridge that spans the rough waters of adolescence, preparing students academically and socially for the rigors of high school, work and college.

Freshmen with Futures is a high school mentoring program that connects local employers with students. Employee mentors serve as role models to help students make the connection to the "real world of work."

In Three Rivers, a strong partnership with local employers, civic groups and committed individuals is bringing together employee mentors who will meet with small groups of students on a monthly basis to serve as an authentic resource to students. Connected to the school career unit, mentors will help students understand that their efforts in high school will impact them as they develop goals and visions for the future -- no matter what direction they choose.
