The Redmond Partnership for Student Success established a job shadow program to help students understand the skills and knowledge required for success in college and the workplace. This year 368 students participated in a 3-hour job shadow at local employers. The program has been embraced by the school district and become part of the curriculum of the Futures Class, a graduation requirement. Students are required to create resumes, cover letters, and portfolios of work for prospective job positions. They then contact employers to arrange an interview. At the end of the interview, the student shadows the employer for the remainder of the time. If a student has transportation to leave Central Oregon and wishes to shadow outside the area, that has been arranged. Students have job shadowed as far away as the Pittsburgh Steelers Training Center in Pennsylvania! (For research into brain injury). There is also significant post shadow work done by the students, such as thank you letters and evaluations. Students consistently state that the experience is beneficial to them in a variety of ways. Employers are actively engaged, and happy to participate in a meaningful way.
