Hillsboro’s Literacy Partners effort serves all four middle schools to help improve reading achievement of Hispanic students.  Each week for an hour, mentors and eighth grade students engage in a variety of activities that involve reading, such as reading and discussing Harry Potter, researching college websites, or solving a word puzzle. Literacy can impact one's income level, occupation, education, housing, and access to medical care. Literacy Partners aims to help Hillsboro students develop a love for reading and be poised for success in school and life. The outcomes have been positive: 87% of the participating students believed they improved in school as a result of the program and mentors and teachers reported an increase in students reading for pleasure.
