Through Project College Bound, education, community and business leaders have come together to change a culture of low expectations into a progressive, achievement-oriented vision for Hermiston youth. Education, community and business leaders are coming together to increase the number of students advancing to post-secondary education. Strategies include mentoring juniors and seniors through the college selection process, generating publicity around students who successfully attend trade schools and college, creating a website with links to resources, providing financial aid assistance, and arranging campus visits. The program is making a difference. Project College Bound earned the Legacy Innovation Award, which was presented in 2008 by AARP honoring one high school from each state. To date, hundreds of students have participated in the program, resulting in an increase in the number of students attending college and trade schools. Last year, project graduates received $1.5 million in scholarships. This year, the school is looking at partnering with the chamber of commerce to expand their job shadowing program.
