First Small Schools Film Festival
Students View on the Small Schools Initiative
“School change and its affect on students and schools” is the theme for the first Oregon Small Schools Film Festival to be held at the Guild Theatre in Portland on May 9, 2006. In cooperation with the NW Film Center, the festival will feature over ten short films and videos produced by students from schools participating in the Oregon Small Schools Initiative. In addition, each school produced a one-minute film on the theme of “school change” which will be edited into a Video Quilt by the NW Film Center staff and shown at the festival.
“The festival provides a creative opportunity for students and teachers to share their stories and feelings about what is happening at their schools,” said René Léger, executive director of E3. “We are really looking forward to an exciting evening for the students, families, teachers and our partners.”
Students have received technical support from the NW Film Center staff including training on how to use cameras and editing software, and how to structure their projects. “Staff from the NW Film Center is wonderful to work with,” said Karen Phillips, program director for the Oregon Small Schools Initiative. “They are true education partners, and provide students an opportunity to learn and express themselves in a unique way. This evening is going to a great experience for the students, and everyone else.”
